Steppenwolf  est fondé en 1967 à Los Angeles par le chanteur d'origine allemande  John Kay . Souvent considérée comme l'inventeur officiel
du hard-rock, la formation enregistre un hymne pour bikers américains
sur son album éponyme de 1968, intitulé " Born To Be Wild ".
C'est là que l'on retrouve pour la première fois trace de la mention
" heavy-metal ". Dès lors, Steppenwolf  enchaîne les succès jusqu'au
milieu des années soixante-dix, période à laquelle le groupe se sépare.
Depuis, des reformations épisodiques se reproduisent à intervalles plus
ou moins réguliers. Un classique !
